Bedu a very popular wild fruit of the middle Himalayan region which is edible with seeds found at low to medium altitude. It is sweet and juicy and the quality of this fruit is excellent. In fact, the entire plant of Bedu is used. Especially the bark, root, leaves, fruits, and chops are full of medicinal properties due to which it is helpful in the prevention of many diseases. Bedu is also found to be effective in bladder disease disorder. It is rich in organic matter as well as has superior antioxidant properties, due to which Bedu is used to prevent many diseases like - nervous system disorder and hepatic diseases. Bedu is not only beneficial for humans with its medicinal properties but also acts as good fodder for the animals, which is considered very good for the milk animals so that the milk of the milk animals increased.
This plant of the Moraceae family is also known as wild fig in English, about 800 species of self-growing Bedu are found, as far as scientific analysis of Bedu is concerned, it is very nutritious and has medicinal properties. According to the European General of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences 2016, due to the presence of alkaloids, steroids, flavonoids, tannins, beta-sitosterol in the fruit of Bedu, Antioxidant and anti-coagulant present in the fruit is used in the prevention of lung and bladder disease disorder. The presence of beta-sitosterol, triterpenes glaunol, gallic acid, rutin alpha, beta-amyrin in the leaves and bark of the plant it is used as nephroprotective, anti-diabetic, anti-microbial, and cardioprotective.
According to a 2012 study by the International Journal of Pharma and Bioscience, Bedu contains more phenolic and flavonoid elements than peach and Timla, due to which Bedu is used in herbal pharmaceuticals to reduce oxidative stress.
Talking about the scientific analysis of nutritional quality of Bedu fruit, it contains protein-4.06 percent, fiber-17.65 percent, fat 4.71 percent, carbohydrate-20.78 percent, sodium-0.75 mg / 100g, calcium-105.4 mg 0 / 100g, Potassium-1.58 mg / 100g, phosphorus-1.88mg / 100g and maximum organic matter are found up to 95.90 percent. The ripened fruit of Bedu contains 45.2 percent juice, 80.5 percent moisture, 12.1 percent soluble elements and about 6 percent sugar. During a season about 25 kg of fruit can be obtained from Bedu tree.
Bedu is also used as a fruit, vegetable and medicine in Uttarakhand and in many other states, It is popularly known as Bedu, Pheru, Khemri in Uttarakhand, Manmejadi in Andhra Pradesh, Pipri in Gujarat, Fangra, Khasra, Fago in Himachal Pradesh. Bedu is a valuable plant found in low altitude to medium altitude areas of North-Western Himalayas. Apart from Uttarakhand, it is also found in Punjab, Kashmir, Himachal, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Somalia, Ethiopia, and Sudan.
